The Alternate Side Weekend Report: May 21st-24th
The times they are a-changin’. Well, not really. I’m starting to think that the New York indie music scene isn’t that different from the beat generation of the 1960s. DIY rock and folk thrive in the five boroughs and the popular fashions are clearly not new. If I’m not mistaken, everyone walks around looking and acting like Bob Dylan! In honor of the father of all that is hip, put on your boots and shades and have a freewheelin’ time at one of the “Dylan-themed” shows this weekend!
Thursday

Most likely you’ll go your way, and I’ll go mine. But we’ll both meet up at the Mercury Lounge for the annual Dylan Fest! This music festival is a great way for NYC’s premiere bands to pay homage to ol’ Robert Zimmerman and for you to enjoy their tributes. Adam Green, Hymns, Fountains of Wayne, and Little Joy will be there to play their personal Dylan favorites. The show is Thursday, May 21, at 9:30pm. 21+
Friday

Dylan owned some sweet crocodile boots. I bet the band Crocodiles know all about croc inspired footwear. This duo must own some cool kicks on account of all the shoe-gazing they do. Although they stare at their feet, the California natives also do a lot with their guitars. Hearing them is like when Dylan first tried an electric in ’65. Far out, man. Check out these guys this Friday, May 22, at Studio B. The show starts 8pm. 21+
Saturday

Isn’t that just like a woman? Strumming her guitar and rocking out with the boys? Bob Dylan always displayed a penchant for musical girls (Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell). I’m pretty sure he’d love Marissa Paternoster of the punk band Screaming Females. Ms. Paternoster shreds like no one else and you wouldn’t believe that her three piece band can make all that noise. See Screaming Females on Saturday, May 23, at Silent Barn. The show starts at 8pm and is all ages!
Sunday

The answer my friend is blowin’ in the …willowz. That’s right. The Willowz will provide you with answers to all of life’s questions with their west coast garage rock. This four piece band will put on the perfect show to end you Dylan-rific weekend. Catch them this Sunday, May 24, at The Stone Pony. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $15. All Ages!
