The Alternate Side Weekend Report: Jun 11th-Jun 14th
Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me? No, I’m sure it’s not just me. You feel it too, right? This weekend New York City is up in figurative flames! The hipster heat of the best indie bands around has penetrated the city and there is no escaping being engulfed by the blaze! So get out of the AC and enjoy the musical conflagration. As Arthur Brown once said, “I am the god of hell fire and I bring you...” these scorching bands!
Thursday

Matt and Eleanor Friedberger need some kindling for their fiery furnace and they think that you’ll do just fine! Brother and sister duo, The Fiery Furnaces, are bringing their mix of wacky and eclectic musical stylings to le poisson rouge on Thursday, June 11. The show starts at 7pm and tickets are $18. 18+. I hope Eleanor’s boyfriend is in attendance. Oh how I burn for you, Alex Kapranos!
Friday

Even the animals are in, uh, heat. I guess that’s not the best way to put it, but Brooklyn’s Kittens Ablaze are definitely on fire this weekend. This folk-y, jangly sounding band will touch your heart with all their furry cuteness. Kittens Ablaze is playing 155 Water Street (The Brooklyn Invitational) on Friday, June 12. The show starts at 10:30pm and tickets are $8. All Ages!
Saturday

Somebody better alert the FDNY that Glasslands is hosting four fire breathing dragons this Saturday. I’m pretty sure that goes against some fire safety code. Oh wait, they’re not real dragons! They’re the Dragons of Zynth, a super awesome glam, soul band. The show is part of the Northside Festival and starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10. 21+
Sunday

Imagine if Animal from The Muppets had a real band. Obviously, that band would be awesome and they would call themselves The Drums. Now imagine that The Drums were forced to kick Animal out because he had sub-par people skills. Well, that’s exactly what happened. See The Drums on Sunday, June 14, at Public Assembly. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $7. 21+. Oh, and with regards to fire, Jon Pierce and Jacob Graham, of The Drums, are just plain hot.
