Audio: Interview with Moby

"The marriage of art and commerce doesn't work so well for me. I'm not very good at it. Whenever I've had commercial success its been completely accidental. Those times in my life where I've tried to have commercial success, its completely backfired." -Moby

The Alternate Side Weekend Report: Jun 25th-28th

So, it’s the summer and I’ve been watching a lot of television. I recently watched a documentary about inanimate objects. (Don’t judge me, I was really bored.) Did you know that there’s a political party who’s main candidate is an inflatable whale? And that someone even fell in love with and married the Eiffel Tower?! It happens. Don’t be surprised if you fall for the bands playing this weekend and their inanimate namesakes.

"My father was a radio DJ in Seattle, and I remember when I was in junior high, meeting Elvis Costello and hanging out in-studio with Pearl Jam", words spoken by Michael Benjamin Lerner front-man-drummer of Telekinesis.... Check out the full video performance and interview.

Video: The Maccabees / Miike Snow/ Music Hall Of Williamsburg - June 20th, 2009

If you have tickets for the sold out Maccabees/Miike Snow show tonight at The Mercury Lounge, you are one lucky mofo! Everyone and their grandmother wants go. Atleast my grandmother does. But absolutely no tickets are available on craigslist! Now what’s a girl to do? Anyway, if you do have tickets to the show I think you’ll walk out a firm believer in the Maccabees!

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Dorothy, you’re not in Kansas anymore. You’re in New York City! This weekend, I would like to welcome you to the jungle. Beastly bands will be roaming wild all over the city. For your safety, please remember to stay in large groups as you survey the wildlife. And please, please, please feed the animals. They are, after all, musicians.

Video: In-studio with Jack Penate

Jack Penate has been enjoying some serious buzz in his home in the UK. Apparently he rose to fame pretty quickly and people get skeptical when that happens. I liked the record immediately when I listened to it, but I was also a little dubious of whether he would be able to recreate it live. I am happy to report that he and his band did just fine.

Five Points Feile

Fans of the local NYC music scene might want to consider a trip to The Knitting Factory this evening. Black 47 and Shilelagh Law will team up for a Five Points Féile. This will be a take-no-prisoners night of New York Irish Rock and Traditional Music with both bands doing full sets (SL/9pm -B47/11pm) and combining for a final jam at the end of the night. Northside Music Festival

The first-ever Northside Festival kicks off this evening in Brooklyn. The four day music fest looks like it'll give CMJ a run for their money based on the excellent lineup. Also, all of the music venues are located within walking distance of one another - which is a major advantage compared to CMJ.

The Alternate Side Weekend Report: Jun 11th-Jun 14th

Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me? No, I’m sure it’s not just me. You feel it too, right? This weekend New York City is up in figurative flames! The hipster heat of the best indie bands around has penetrated the city and there is no escaping being engulfed by the blaze! So get out of the AC and enjoy the musical conflagration. As Arthur Brown once said, “I am the god of hell fire and I bring you...” these scorching bands!

Video: In-studio with Benjy Ferree

Sounds like an oxymoron but Benjy Ferree has a "polished raw" sound! He creates for the love of his art and once you hear his songs you'll forget he's named after a TV dog.

The Alternate Side Weekend Report: June 4th-7th

It’s June and you know what that means. Somebody needs to throw a dance party! Thank goodness New York got the memo, because the denizens of the five boroughs are more than ready to get their dance on. Wait, Studio 54 is now the Roundabout Theatre Company? Don't bother! Get your kicks at these happenin’ venues turned “discothèques” this weekend!

The Alternate Side Video Podcast

You can't text, you can't tweet, you can't instant message, sounds like the 80's? Not so fast, it's actually the feeling of a commuter in the NYC subway system. Rather than staring at the Dr.Z's skin advertisements or that cute guy/girl you'll never have enough guts to talk to... you could be catching up on all the behind the scenes action from our recording studios.

Video, Review and Pics: Lykke Li At Highline Ballroom

With no advanced tickets or last minute connections, I trooped it to the west side of Manhattan for my very first experience at Highline Ballroom for the Swedish songstress Lykke Li. If you’ve never heard of her; it’s about time you do your music research because her debut album “Youth Novels” topped everyone’s 2008 favorites list, including ours.

Video: In-Studio with Jenny Owen Youngs

Montclaire, New Jersey. Not only the home of arguably the coolest suburban music venue, The Wellmont Theatre, but also to a talented singer-songwriter named Jenny Owen Youngs. Jenny recently released her sophomore album "Transmitter Failure," a pop-rock album with vintage stylings ranging from rockabilly guitar to ukulele folk to straight ahead indie rock. It's incredibly catchy and fun, and its been playing on repeat here in The Alternate Side offices as of late.
