Yellow Ostrich: TAS In Session

An evolution from laptop-in-bedroom dabbling to full-fledged, fast-rising band seems to be the biographical trajectory of every other fledgling group these days, but for Yellow Ostrich frontman Alex Schaaf, the transition from solo act to trio appeared to be an effortless one. Yellow Ostrich's sophomore release, Strange Land, is a confident leap from loops to an aggressive live sound. The band embarks on a tour on April 7 — they play New York's Mercury Lounge on April 8 with TEEN — and Schaaf, Tapper and Natchez recently came in for a iive session which airs on TAS on 91.5 WNYE this Friday, April 6, at 11 a.m. EDT, streaming on The Alternate Side.

Radiation City: CMJ Music Marathon Blog

With their effusive, retro-60s girl group panache, Radiation City, out of Portland, Oregon, cut their own warm, distinctive path at this year's CMJ Music Marathon. The band plays one last CMJ gig today, October 22, at Spike Hill at 3 p.m., introducing New York to their confident debut album The Hands That Take You, out now on Tender Loving Empire/Apes Tapes. The Alternate Side asked the band if they'd document their virgin CMJ Music Marathon experience and they happily did. Exclusive photos and commentary (plus a couple of singles to check out) from the band after the jump.

Northside Festival Coverage: Ted Leo, Wise Blood, Yellow Ostrich

It seems hard to believe that the Northside Festival was at full throttle just last weekend. TAS photographers Joe Grimaldi and Bailey Baffert have uncovered more photos from their Brooklyn escapades covering the festival. They also checked out sets from surprise Northside guest Ted Leo at Club Europa on June 18, Barsuk Records' Yellow Ostrich who opened for Beirut on June 17 and the expanded lineup of Chris Laufman's Wise Blood at Cameo Gallery on June 19.
