The return of James Mercer and The Shins, after a five-year hiatus, marked a lineup shift for the band, but Mercer's thorny, pensive and keenly observed songcraft remains as interesting as ever on the band's fourth album, Port of Morrow. The Shins play the cavernous Terminal 5 on May 1, the third of three shows with exceptional support bands; this night, local favorites Real Estate will open. And yes, The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to some lucky fans.

Yes, both Girls and Real Estate are two of the most frustrating bands to Google (leading you down the internet rabbit hole of house listings or lad magazines), but the fact that both of these tour de force, TAS-loved bands are touring together is cause for celebration. Both released superior sophomore albums — Girls' Father, Son, Holy Ghost and Real Estate's Days — and they'll be playing Terminal 5 on January 14. Local band Real Estate might not have the easiest name to navigate on Google (although you'll find some intriguing New Jersey house listings when looking for tour dates), but the savvy rockers are becoming far easier to find, thanks to their accomplished sophomore album, Days, out now on Domino Records. Real Estate are touring the States now and arrive at New York's Bowery Ballroom on November 23, but they recently dropped by The Alternate Side to play a four-song set and chat about the days it took to make Days. You can hear the session on TAS on 91.5 WNYE this Friday, November 18, at 11 a.m. ET or streaming on The Alternate Side.

Real Estate Throw A Free Queens Party, Stream New Album On NPR Music

Real Estate's new album Days, their first for new label Domino Records, is out on October 18 (the day before in the UK), but fans can listen to their sophomore effort streaming now on NPR Music. Plus the New Jersey-Brooklyn trio, who embark on a lengthy UK, European and North American tour beginning October 20, will celebrate the release of Days with a free show at Astoria's Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden this Saturday, October 15 at 4 p.m.
