TAS In Session Flashback 2012: Part Two

Throughout the last year, The Alternate Side staff has chatted with dozens of up-and-coming and established bands in our live sessions, spanning the globe from Dalama, Sweden (The Tallest Man On Earth) to Toronto, Canada (Metric) to San Francisco, California (Geographer). The first part of our TAS in 2012 retrospective was published last week, and as we dive into 2013, we're revisiting more of those sessions — and live performance videos — that we liked. We'll also report on what's coming up for those bands in 2013. We also offer up another big round of applause for the intrepid WFUV/The Alternate Side engineering and video teams too.

Win Tickets For Poliça At Webster Hall On October 6

Poliça, which spent the better part of the summer on the festival circuit,  is back on the road this fall. The group, led by the mutable Channy Leaneagh, is passing through New York again. This time, the introspective Minneapolis band is bringing along the excellent Gardens & Villa of Southern California whose members have released a strong remix of Poliça's "The Maker." Win tickets to see Poliça and Gardens & Villa at Webster Hall show on October 6.

Watch Poliça's New Video For 'Dark Star'

Poliça kicked off a tour of the States this past weekend, a cross-country amble (that includes one Canadian date in Vancouver) that brings the band to New York's Webster Hall on October 6. To mark the tour's start, the re-release of  the group's debut Give You The Ghost via Mom + Pop Records and the release of a "Dark Star" remix EP, Channy Leaneaugh and her cohorts have released a new video for "Dark Star." Watch the video, which features Leaneaugh slinking around in a hoodie and looking suitably mysterious, here.

When autotune is abused — and yes, Ke$ha, we're looking at you — it's painful. But in the right hands, as aptly demonstrated by Bon Iver or Poliça, the audio processing technique can be downright beautiful. Singer Channy Leaneagh and her longtime Gayngs cohort and producer Ryan Olson have created a mesmerizing digitized soundscape on Poliça's restless debut album, Give You The Ghost. Not long ago, Channy and her bandmates, who play Lollapalooza this weekend, visited The Alternate Side and WFUV's Studio A for an exhilarating session.  Watch the videos and listen to the interview and live performance, airing on TAS on 91.5 WNYE this Friday, August 3, at 11 a.m. EDT, streaming on The Alternate Side.

The TAS Staff Picks Our Top Albums And Singles Of 2012 ... So Far

The first half of 2012 has already come and gone. The Alternate Side staff, looking at the scores of WAV files, MP3s, CDs and even vinyl singles we've trundled through over the past six months, is slightly overwhelmed by the abundance of good music, so we've made some midpoint selections for our top 10 (or 11) albums and tracks of the year thus far. We have the freedom to change our minds completely by December, but in the meantime, bands and artists like Japandroids, Jack White, Hot Chip, The Walkmen, 2:54, Zeus, Public Service Broadcasting, Father John Misty, Cold Specks, Alt-J, Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn have made the cut. Read the lists after the jump.

Poliça: SXSW 2012 Interview

Poliça, just a year old, was born out of Gayngs, a collective known for its shifting lineup of two dozen musicians — including Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Megafaun. Gayngs member and singer Channy Leanagh is the heart of Poliça, ably supported by her bandmates, like Gayngs' Ryan Olson, who produced Poliça's debut Give You The Ghost, and Bon Iver's own Mike Noyce. Riding high on an NPR Music's free day party last week, plus seven other Austin gigs, Leanagh took some time out on Saturday morning, right before the band's Hard Rock showcase at Cedar Door, to chat with The Alternate Side's Alisa Ali about the genesis of Poliça, which actually began at last year's SXSW festival.
