The Antlers, Elbow And James Blake Sessions Noted As Faves Of TAS Engineering And Video Staffers

Behind every one of 2011's TAS or WFUV sessions in Studio A was an engineer who handled the mix, charged with the responsibility of making notable bands and artists like Feist, James Blake, Elbow, The Naked and Famous, The Antlers, Fruit Bats and more sound as good as possible for on-air broadcast. The bulk of the sessions are also taped by a video team, who are learning to capture performances in a visually exciting way. As the year comes to an end, the TAS video and engineering teams,  most of them students at Fordham University, chose the most rewarding or meaningful sessions they worked on over the last year.

TAS In Session: Flashback 2011, Part 1

Over the past twelve months, The Alternate Side, alongside our sister station WFUV, has hosted dozens of live sessions in our studio with a vivid, inspiriting array of musicians and bands. We've had the chance to shift from The Antlers' luminous introspections to the muscular, shambolic rock of Man Man and end up at the gentle-but-lethal songwriting of Laura Marling. We wanted to revisit some of our favorite performances from many of those sessions, like The Naked and Famous' stirring "Young Blood" or Beirut's accordion-spurred anthem "Santa Fe," and give you updates on what's coming up in 2012 for many of these artists and bands.

Listen And Watch: The Naked and Famous On TAS In Session On WNYE 91.5, August 12

New Zealand's The Naked and Famous, who played a strong set this past Sunday at Central Park Summerstage, sandwiched between Friendly Fires and Cults, will play a sold-out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 12 and Brooklyn Bowl on August 13. The quintet of tireless road warriors visited The Alternate Side earlier this summer for a live session of songs from their impressive debut Passive Me, Aggressive You. You can listen to that session in its entirety this Friday, August 12, at 11 a.m. on TAS on 91.5 WNYE and streaming on TAS. After the jump, check out videos of their TAS performances of "Young Blood," "Punching In A Dream" and more.

MTK Festival Is Cancelled Due To Low Ticket Sales

The curse of New York area music festivals has struck again. The promoters of the inaugural Music To Know (MTK) Festival in East Hampton, Long Island have announced that they're pulling the plug on the entire event due to low ticket sales. The festival, which had a strong lineup of Bright Eyes, Vampire Weekend, Ellie Goulding, The Naked and Famous and more, was to take place next weekend, August 12-14.

TAS In Session (Glastonbury Preview): The Naked And Famous

It's Glastonbury Festival week and one of many bands making a prestigious Worthy Farm debut is The Naked and Famous whose debut album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, a massive hit in Australia and their native New Zealand, has quickly gained traction worldwide. The quintet, led by the dynamic vocal interplay between Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith, is spending the bulk of their 2011 touring the globe. In addition to Glasto (they play the Other Stage this Friday, June 24), they've lined up Lollapalooza and five more New York area dates. During a recent Stateside stopover, they dropped by the TAS studios and played a terrific set of four songs, including "Young Blood," "The Sun" and "Punching In A Dream."

Vampire Weekend, Bright Eyes Headline MTK Festival in East Hamptons

Okay, a fine reason to endure the Hampton jitney this summer: Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes will headline the MTK: Music To Know Festival on August 13-14 in East Hampton, Long Island with Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Tame Impala, Matt & Kim, Ra Ra Riot, The Naked and Famous, M. Ward and more joining the lineup. Tickets go on sale today, May 10.

See Foals, Freelance Whales and The Naked And Famous On May 4

It would be criminal to miss the triple play of bands coming to Terminal 5 on May 4. The headliners, Oxford rockers Foals, released one of the best albums of 2010, Total Life Forever, and their support is hardly shabby: New Zealand's The Naked and Famous (one of the buzzier SXSW bands) and New York's charming Freelance Whales. And yes, The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to some lucky winners.
