First Listen: Low, 'The Invisible Way'

Low's 10th full-length studio album was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, who avoids any temptation to radically stretch the Minnesota band's boundaries. But he wisely dials up the interplay between its two singers, while letting bits of piano and spare percussive rumbles provide a jolt of portent. Listen to Low's masterful new album The Invisible Way streaming via WFUV and NPR Music before its release on March 19 on Sub Pop.

TAS In Session: Flashback 2011, Part 2

Last week, The Alternate Side posted the first part of TAS in Session: Flashback 2011 featuring artists like The Drums, Laura Marling and Real Estate. This week, round two of some of The Alternate Side and our sister station WFUV's favorite performances from the last year, including the pensive wizardry of James Blake, the stirring poetry of Elbow and the sprawling pop boulevards crossed by Fool's Gold.  In addition to revisiting highlights, like Low's far-from-somnolent "Try To Sleep," or YACHT's incendiary "Dystopia," we'll also link to the original sessions and update you on what's coming up in 2012 for many of TAS' notable artists and bands.

Those mighty Minnesota masters of quiet rock, Low, recently released their ninth studio album, C'mon, the followup to 2007's politically indignant Drums and Guns. Guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk, drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker, bassist Steve Garrington and touring keyboardist/backing vocalist Eric Pollard came to The Alternate Side's Studio A to play several tracks from C'mon and discussed their surprising choice of producer - Ke$ha figures into it - and recalled an ignominious SXSW gig when they got drowned out by another band ... and sought revenge.
