Celebrate Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day marks its fifth anniversary today, April 21, and across the US, UK, Europe and Canada, thousands of independent record shops — stubborn survivors of these hard economic times —  will be marking the day with special releases from hundreds of diverse bands and artists, like the White Stripes, Beach House, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, St. Vincent, Miike Snow, Foster the People, Florence and the Machine, PiL, Arctic Monkeys, Shabazz Palaces,  Sigur Rós, M83, and hell, even Katy Perry.  in New York, local stores like Other Music, Sound Fix and J&R Music World will have special events marking the day. One of the most beautiful albums of 2010 was Four Tet's haunting There Is Love In You, a release that sealed Kieran Hebden's reputation as one of rock's most innovative electronic musicians and producers. Genre-defying musician and theatrical innovator Laurie Anderson's boundary-blurring career has gently zigzagged from a left-field radio hit ("O Superman") to monumental stage shows (Home of the Brave) to recent collaborations with husband Lou Reed and free jazz maestro John Zorn. Anderson recently spoke to The Alternate Side about a variety of wayward topics, including her new album, Homeland, and her latest multimedia stage rumination, Delusion, currently playing at the Brooklyn Academy of Music through Sunday, October 3.

An international flock of bands is slated to come to New York from October 19-23 for the CMJ Music Marathon and the officially announced bands and artists include Phoenix, Surfer Blood, The Drums, School of Seven Bells, Ghosface Killah, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, UNKLE, Four Tet, Greg Dulli and scores more. Get ready for bedlam.

Caribou Lines Up Tour Dates, Live Double Album

Caribou, the moniker for Daniel Snaith and his electro-pop persona, has announced a hefty load of tour dates, putting Snaith and his band on the road until mid-December. In addition, a live album, recorded at ATP in 2009 and featuring Caribou with Four Tet and members of Born Ruffians, Sun Ra Arkestra and Junior Boys, will be released this autumn.
