TAS In Session: Flashback 2011, Part 1

Over the past twelve months, The Alternate Side, alongside our sister station WFUV, has hosted dozens of live sessions in our studio with a vivid, inspiriting array of musicians and bands. We've had the chance to shift from The Antlers' luminous introspections to the muscular, shambolic rock of Man Man and end up at the gentle-but-lethal songwriting of Laura Marling. We wanted to revisit some of our favorite performances from many of those sessions, like The Naked and Famous' stirring "Young Blood" or Beirut's accordion-spurred anthem "Santa Fe," and give you updates on what's coming up in 2012 for many of these artists and bands.

Cults, the duo of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, released their well-received, self-titled debut album in early summer and are firmly lodged in the "best albums of the year" list-o-mania of December. They're kicking off 2012 with a New Year's Eve shindig in Los Angeles and then head out for a winter tour, that includes a stretch in Australia and New Zealand. The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to Cults' stop at Webster Hall on January 19.

Cults' brand of retro-gazing pop isn't necessarily revolutionary, but Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion's nervy confidence and assured, sparkling songs make the band one of the more intriguing newcomers of 2011. Follin and Oblivion (plus their touring bandmates) play Central Park's Summerstage this Sunday, August 7, following their Lollapalooza appearance on Friday, and they all dropped by The Alternate Side for a very special live session recently, rolling out great versions of tracks like "Abducted." Video after the jump and catch the full interview with Cults this Friday, August 5 on TAS in Session on 91.5 WNYE at 11 a.m. EDT.

So much for those years that Cults' Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion spent studying film in New York. Forsaking cinema for rock, at least for the time being, Cults continue their North American tour this month and have announced details of their self-titled debut album, due out June 7 in the States and May 30 in the UK.
