TAS Live Review: Governors Ball Music Festival 2013

If you attended this past weekend's Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall's Island, you're likely still waterlogged. Friday's tropical storm made festival attendance a misery as fans braved delayed ferry service, windswept rain and shin-deep mud slicks. The dramatic weather even forced the postponement of sets by Kings of Leon and Pretty Lights. Saturday and Sunday were still muddy, but far brighter. Still, FUV and TAS' Alisa Ali pulled on her boots, slogged through the puddles and had a wonderful time, catching Foals, Beirut, Azealia Banks and more.

The Antlers, Elbow And James Blake Sessions Noted As Faves Of TAS Engineering And Video Staffers

Behind every one of 2011's TAS or WFUV sessions in Studio A was an engineer who handled the mix, charged with the responsibility of making notable bands and artists like Feist, James Blake, Elbow, The Naked and Famous, The Antlers, Fruit Bats and more sound as good as possible for on-air broadcast. The bulk of the sessions are also taped by a video team, who are learning to capture performances in a visually exciting way. As the year comes to an end, the TAS video and engineering teams,  most of them students at Fordham University, chose the most rewarding or meaningful sessions they worked on over the last year.

TAS In Session: Flashback 2011, Part 1

Over the past twelve months, The Alternate Side, alongside our sister station WFUV, has hosted dozens of live sessions in our studio with a vivid, inspiriting array of musicians and bands. We've had the chance to shift from The Antlers' luminous introspections to the muscular, shambolic rock of Man Man and end up at the gentle-but-lethal songwriting of Laura Marling. We wanted to revisit some of our favorite performances from many of those sessions, like The Naked and Famous' stirring "Young Blood" or Beirut's accordion-spurred anthem "Santa Fe," and give you updates on what's coming up in 2012 for many of these artists and bands.

The Black Keys, M83, PJ Harvey And More On TAS Staff's Best Of 2011

The Alternate Side staff both loves — and dreads — the annual rush of ubiquitous end-of-year lists, sifting through the best albums and singles of the twelve months gone by. There are usually far too many records or songs we'd like to mention, so consider the following just a start of what we really enjoyed in 2011, leaping from The Black Keys to tUnE-yArDs to Elbow to Little Dragon. And feel free to add your comments on what you liked too — we'd love to hear from you.

Beirut's Zach Condon and his bandmates are touring North America through November 13, then head across the Pacific for a sweep through Australia and Japan in December and January. According to the band's site, they're excited about the trip down under; a sense of wanderlust defines Condon. It's a restlessness that's eloquently explored in Beirut's excellent third album The Riptide. Recently Beirut joined WFUV/The Alternate Side's Alisa Ali for a very special session which can be heard on NPR Music now, but after the jump, check out exclusive videos of the band's four-song set in Studio A, including "Santa Fe," "East Harlem" and "Goshen."
