Nadine Shah: Five Essential Albums

Nadine Shah doesn't release her debut album, Love Your Dum and Mad, until July 23 (July 22 in the UK), but the London-based singer-songwriter's disarming, sultry and brutally beautiful vocals have earned her quick critical comparisons to PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and even Leonard Cohen. Intrigued by Nadine Shah's torchy, turbulent music, The Alternate Side asked what might be on Shah's "essential" list when it came to albums and artists she loved  ... and she came back with choices as surprising as her songs.

The Boxer Rebellion's SXSW Blog: Part Two

The Boxer Rebellion, who have been blogging for The Alternate Side at SXSW, not only made it through music festival madness, but they also had the chance to transcend Austin fun with a more globally-relevant concern - the SXSW4Japan telethon benefitting survivors of Japan's earthquake and tsunami disaster with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Hanson, North Mississippi Allstars and more. Part two of drummer Piers Hewitt's SXSW blog after the jump.

Win Tickets For The Kills On April 29

Tags: The Kills

The gritty, sexy interplay of The Kills' Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince is the perfect distillation of what rock should be: explosive, emotional and a little messy. The pair tore up SXSW with a series of sweaty shows and embark on a North American tour next month, supporting their upcoming album Blood Pressures. The Alternate Side is giving away tickets for The Kills' Terminal 5 show on April 29 with Cold Cave and The Entrance Band.

See Foals, Freelance Whales and The Naked And Famous On May 4

It would be criminal to miss the triple play of bands coming to Terminal 5 on May 4. The headliners, Oxford rockers Foals, released one of the best albums of 2010, Total Life Forever, and their support is hardly shabby: New Zealand's The Naked and Famous (one of the buzzier SXSW bands) and New York's charming Freelance Whales. And yes, The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to some lucky winners.

Win Tix For The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart On May 6

New York's shoegazing, fuzz-stoked, pop quartet The Pains of Being Pure at Heart just completed a triumphant week at SXSW and begin a North American tour on March 31 in support of their excellent sophomore album Belong, out on March 29. Catch these local favorites when they play their big homecoming gig on May 6 at Webster Hall.

Esben and the Witch SXSW Blog: Day Four

Esben and the Witch's indefatigable trio of Daniel Copeman, Thomas Fisher and Rachel Davies has been poetically and visually documenting their SXSW experiences - the good, the bad and the ugly - for The Alternate Side. The powerful Goth-touched band, which recently released their startling debut Violet Cries on Matador Records, play their last SXSW show today, March 19, the all-star Mess With Texas party.

The Boxer Rebellion's SXSW Blog: Part One

Anglo-American anthemic rockers The Boxer Rebellion are gearing up for a North American tour this April, but first they made a return trip to SXSW, supporting their new album The Cold Still which dropped last month. Despite heavy-duty SXSW stress - the band plays their last Austin showcase tonight, March 19 - drummer Piers Hewitt found time to send on a blog for The Alternate Side.
