FUV At The Newport Folk Festival

The Newport Folk Festival is next weekend, and FUV is once again headed to Fort Adams State Park with NPR Music to bring you some of the sights and sounds. Our coverage kicks off next Friday, with the opening night performance by Ryan Adams. Although the prolific songwriter has a deep catalog to draw from, we're likely in for a lot of new material as Ryan is set to release a self-titled album on September 9th. Listen in and find out, Friday at 6pm on 90.7FM or online. Then all weekend long, FUV will be at Newport's main Fort Stage, recording performances and posting them to the FUV Vault.

Why? will be playing Le Poisson Rouge on March 16 and will be joined by Danielson, aka Daniel Christopher Smith, who is playing a set that's part of Carnegie Hall's 2012 American Mavericks series. The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to the early show.

TAS In Session: Laura Gibson

Laura Gibson's first two solo albums were noted for their hushed intimacy, but for her third release, the Portland, Oregon songwriter wanted to "err on the side of confidence" and set a new challenge for herself.  The result, the more assertive La Grande, is still bathed in Gibson's poetry and gentle observations, but the sound is bolder and more layered. Gibson and her bandmates visited The Alternate Side for a intriguing and candid interview late last month and you can listen to the session tomorrow, Friday, February 17, on TAS on 91.5 WNYE at 11 a.m. ET or streaming on The Alternate Side. After the jump, check out video performances of songs like "La Grande" and "Milk-Heavy, Pollen-Eyed."

Watch: Perfume Genius Live At TAS Performing "Hood"

Mike Hadreas, the emotionally candid singer and songwriter better known as Perfume Genius, recently visited The Alternate Side's Studio A in advance of the release of his second album, Put Your Back N 2 It, due out on February 21 on Matador Records. After the jump, watch the exclusive live performance of his new song, "Hood."

TAS Takes On Valentine's Day With Not-So-Silly Love Songs

Ah, Valentine's Day. A time of crushes, Cupids, chocolate and champagne. Or a depressing night spent with a dopey Katherine Heigl rom-com while polishing off a pint of Chunky Monkey. No matter what your take on the loveliest - or most loveless - of days, The Alternate Side staff has pulled together some of our favorite songs that we feel express the best and worst of romance.

The Alternate Side is a proud part of WFUV Public Radio from Fordham University,
90.7 FM on your New York dial and online at wfuv.org.
