The Best of 2014

It was difficult for The Alternate Side staff to narrow down our favorite albums and singles of 2014 (we had so many)—although our disparate lists seemed to converge at St. Vincent, Sylvan Esso, Bob Mould and The War on Drugs—but you can read the choices of Russ Borris, Alisa Ali, Eric Holland, Kara Manning, FUV program director Rita Houston and assistant program director Sarah Wardop here. Or you can read the entire FUV staff list of selections. We also want to hear from you! The "Listener Poll" is open from now through December 14, and we want your vote for your favorites: WFUV will count down the "Top 90 of 2014" later that week.

Fat White Family Ticket Giveaway: Bowery Ballroom On October 18

Irreverent, shambolic and cheerfully seedy, British rockers Fat White Family will brutalize New York next month, raising the roof off of Bowery Ballroom on October 18. Although not quite Gwar-like in intensity, Fat White Family, who re-released their album Champagne Holocaust a few weeks ago, offer up an unforgettable show. The Alternate Side is giving away tickets to what will be the loudest, sweatiest gig in New York City that night. Enter by this Sunday, October 5, for a chance to win.

Luaka Bop Marks Anniversary With Concerts And Box Set

David Byrne's Luaka Bop record label will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a series of New York concerts at Tribeca's Mmuseumm and other venues next month. In addition, the label will reissue Nigerian funk artist William Onyeabor's entire eight-album catalog via a two volume box set in November.

Honeyblood: FUV Live

Glasgow's Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar of Honeyblood released their eponymous debut as a team earlier this year, but in mid-September, McVicar departed the band. Replacing McVicar on drums is Cat Myers (Tweeddale and Myers played their third live gig together in London on Tuesday). Earlier this summer, when Honeyblood was still singer/guitarist Tweeddale and drummer McVicar, the pair visited Studio A for an FUV Live session. Watch videos of Honeyblood in Studio A and listen to the entire session now in the FUV Vault or on TAS on 91.5 WNYE this Friday, September 26, at 11a.m. EDT, also streaming online.

First Listen: Electric Youth, 'Innerworld'

Innerworld is awash in '80s earmarks, but it also conveys a sense of wistfulness; a sense of childlike splendor in danger of succumbing to the ravages of adulthood. Listen to Electric Youth's Innerworld streaming now via WFUV and NPR Music before the album's release on September 30 on Secretly Canadian.
