GlobalFEST 2012 Lineup Set For January 8 In New York

Seems hard to believe that 2012 is right around the corner, but GlobalFEST, the New York world music gathering at Webster Hall, has announced its lineup for the January 8 event. Queens' Afro-Columbia collective M.A.K.U. Soundsystem, Haiti's BélO and Malian folk rappers SMOD, whose band members include the son of Amadou and Mariam and whose 2011 debut was produced by Manu Chao, are among the dozen acts slotted.

Tickets for the three-stage festival go on sale on November 2.

Other bands and artists booked (including several debuts) are Italy's Canzionere Grecanino Salentino, Brazilian samba star Diogo Nogueira, Boston-based East African funk outfit Debo Band, Irish supergroup The Gloaming and Japanese/Mediterranean collective, Silk Road Project Ensemble.

The non-profit GlobalFEST, which is also relying on Kickstarter donations, to underwrite the event and defray some of the bands' costs for coming to the States, marks its ninth festival with the January 8 event. You can check out highlights of GlobalFEST 2011 via NPR Music.
