MTK Festival Is Cancelled Due To Low Ticket Sales

The curse of New York area music festivals has struck again. The promoters of the inaugural Music To Know (MTK) Festival in East Hampton, Long Island have announced that they're pulling the plug on the entire event due to low ticket sales. The festival, which had a strong lineup of Bright Eyes, Vampire Weekend, Ellie Goulding, Chromeo, Matt and Kim, The Naked and Famous and more, was to take place next weekend, August 12-14.

In a statement posted on the MTK Festival website and Facebook page on Saturday, the organizers wrote: "It is with heavy, heavy heart that we regret to inform you that the inaugural MTK: Music To Know Festival in East Hampton will not take place. Despite our unique vision and arranging a world-class line-up, ticket sales were not adequate to allow the event to continue. We wanted to let everyone know now before engaging more deeply."

According to 27East.com, the festival needed to sell 5,500 tickets by today, August 6, in order to proceed but fell short of that number.

Ticket holders are asked to check the festival's site next week for more information regarding refunds.

MTK is one of a long line of major New York area music festivals that have failed to take off, joining a graveyard that includes the ill-fated Field Day, which was pared back to a single, rain-drenched day at Giants Stadium in 2003, and New Jersey's All Points West, which survived for two years before folding after a particularly stormy 2009 weekend.
