Jack White and his trusty Third Man Records van

Jack White Plays Surprise SXSW Gig

Jack White has been careering around Austin in his lemon-drop gold Third Man Rolling Record Store van, so it wasn't surprising to learn that like the Foo Fighters last night, he sneaked in a surprise set this afternoon, March 16. And he even played The White Stripes song "Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground."

He played a brief solo gig by the van near a parking lot by Frank's Diner and also unleashed a Bo Diddley track, "Not Fade Away" (famously covered by Buddy Holly and The Rolling Stones).

The Kills' Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart,  White's The Dead Weather bandmate, were in the crowd watching, along with Seasick Steve who just signed a one-album deal with Third Man Records.

Last night the Foo Fighters played a secret show at Stubb's, celebrating the SXSW showing of their documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth. In addition to playing tracks from their new album Wasting Light, the band also delved into hits like "Everlong" and "Learn To Fly."
