The Jelly and Veoba-sponsored free Pool Parties on the Williamsburg Waterfront, at East River State Park, will be back for a fifth year, beginning July 11. The eclectic roster of bands for the seven announced dates includes Cut Copy, Chromeo, Murder City Devils, !!!, Jeff the Brotherhood, Delorean and Deerhoof with Xiu Xiu covering the whole of Joy Division's album Unknown Pleasures.
There are assorted "surprise special guests" yet to be announced, according the Pool Parties press release. Due to a schedule conflict, the show on August 1 will take place at and around Brooklyn Bowl as a "block party."
As the New York Times recently reported, 2010 return of the Pool Parties, with Brooklyn promoters Jelly at its helm, was in serious jeopardy. The New York State Parks Department wasn't pleased with some of Jelly's safety violations (not heeding an approaching thunderstorm or when part of the stage collapsed at one show), and had begun discussions with other promoters. However, Senator Chuck Schumer and Philip Goldfeder, from the Senator's office, stepped in and strongly supported Jelly's continued involvement with the free concerts. Jelly's co-sponsor this year, Veoba, is a collective of artists, managers, writers and other denizens of the music industry offering peers online resources.
