Demos Dish: Beck's Love Affair With INXS

A t-shirt must for you: Stop Wars (in Star Wars font). Once you've purchased that, then pick up the rare, get 'em while they last Record Club tees which you'll find on Beck's website. Record Club is such a cool project with Beck and musicians you know well from The Alternate Side performing a classic album in one day.

As The Alternate Side has reported in the past, Record Club has covered Skip Spence's Oar, The Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico, Leonard Cohen's The Songs Of Leonard Cohen and now Aussie pop rockers INXS' 1987 hit album Kick.

Last week The Alternate Side posted INXS' "New Sensation” with the Liars' Angus Andrew, Annie Clark and Daniel Hart from St. Vincent. Other tracks will include Sergio Dias from the legendary Brazilian band Os Mutantes, as well as longtime Record Club participant Brian Lebarton, just back from the Charlotte Gainsbourg tour. This week, the Club is tackling "Devil Inside" with Beck handling lead vocals. Kick was chosen by a fellow Aussie, Angus Andrew, from Liars. It was recorded in a little over 12 hours on March 3 of this year. Beck called the experience, "intense, hilarious, daunting and completely fun undertaking."

In more Beck news, he also has recently contributed songs to the upcoming film “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World”, based on the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic book of the same name. The movie stars Michael Cera, Jason Schwartzman, and Anna Kendrick. Beck’s contributions centered on writing songs to be performed by Cera character Pilgrim’s band, Sex Bob-omb. "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" is slated for release on August 13. There will also be a soundtrack album featuring the Beck-penned tracks along with other songs by Broken Social Scene, Metric and Cornelius.

The film was directed by Edgar Wright, who also directed "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead," and scored by Radiohead producer (and Atoms For Peace member) Nigel Godrich.
